A Brief History
|
At the commencement of the booklet issued for the centenary celebrations, the following words appear: “Town Malling, Kent: A neat, substantial, and commodious chapel in the Baptist connection, was opened at the above place on Wednesday June 15th 1836” "Messrs. Shirley of Sevenoaks, Lewis of Chatham and Groser of Maidstone preached on the occasion; the collection at the doors amounted to £28." In the words of the Baptist Magazine report on the opening of the Swan Street Chapel in 1836, it said “Several attempts have been made at different times to raise an interest in this place, each of which has been ultimately given up, until the last, which was commenced in a schoolroom (at Eden Farm), and was opened for divine service by Mr. Groser of Maidstone on Lord’s Day, 15th July 1827”. Abbey View House - this was purchased by the church in 1969 for church use, and part of this was used as the church manse for a few years. Now, however, the minister lives away from the premises and it is only used for church work.
